What to Know Before Buying a Large Hot Tub
Large hot tubs generally measure between 90″ × 90″ and 96″ × 96″ — roughly 7½ to 8 feet square — and seat 6 to 8 people depending on the model. At this footprint and filled weight of approximately 4,000 to 5,500 lbs, three things need to be worked out before anything else: foundation, electrical, and delivery access. Getting those right before purchase day makes the actual delivery and installation straightforward. Skipping them creates problems.
Foundation Requirements for Large Spas
A 4-inch reinforced concrete pad is the standard foundation recommendation for large hot tubs. The pad should be sized to match or slightly exceed the spa’s footprint, properly reinforced with rebar or wire mesh, poured level, and fully cured (28 days minimum) before the spa is placed on it. Existing wood decks at this weight class need to be evaluated by a contractor before use — most standard residential decks are not built to handle 4,000–5,500 lbs in a concentrated area without reinforcement.
Interlocking plastic or composite spa pads are an alternative for some large models, but check the rated load capacity carefully before committing to that option at this size.
Electrical Requirements
Most large hot tubs require a 50–60 amp dedicated 240V circuit with a GFCI disconnect installed within sight of the spa. This is standard work for any licensed electrician familiar with hot tub installs. Budget $400–$800 depending on your panel’s location and distance to the spa pad. Have the circuit installed, inspected, and ready before your delivery date — not after.
Multi-Zone Seating at the Large Scale
Large spas have enough shell real estate to create genuinely distinct therapeutic zones. A typical layout might pair a full lounge seat and elevated captain’s chairs on one end with open upright seating on the other — so the same spa handles serious therapeutic use for one or two people while still working as a social experience for a larger group. Multi-pump systems are common at this size and allow different zones to run at independent pressure levels simultaneously.
Year-Round Performance in Minnesota
A larger water volume takes more energy to heat and more energy to maintain temperature through a Minnesota winter. Insulation quality matters more at the large size class than at smaller sizes — the gap in monthly operating cost between a well-insulated large spa and a poorly insulated one can run $25–$40 per month in winter. Look for full-foam cabinet insulation, an insulated base, and a quality cover with good R-value. These specs are worth asking about before purchase.
Large Hot Tubs — New vs. Refurbished
Large spas come through our refurbished program less frequently than smaller models but do appear. Every refurbished spa goes through a full mechanical rebuild before resale regardless of size — pumps, motors, heater, and key components replaced as needed. Join the Priority List on the refurbished page if you’re open to a refurbished large spa.
