You’re going deeper into Pillar 3: Compare two salt systems that automatically generate sanitizer—one makes bromine, while the other makes chlorine.
Blu-Fusion vs. FreshWater: An Honest Salt System Comparison
Both are real salt systems, and neither provides chemical-free water. “Salt” describes how the sanitizer is produced. Blu-Fusion converts sodium bromide into bromine, while Hot Spring’s FreshWater system converts sodium chloride into chlorine.
We compared what each manufacturer’s own documentation says—not just the sales brochures.
Blu-Fusion vs. FreshWater side by side
| Blu-Fusion TS | FreshWater Salt System | |
|---|---|---|
| Makes | Bromine from sodium bromide | Chlorine from sodium chloride |
| Target sanitizer level | 3–5 ppm bromine | 1–5 ppm chlorine |
| Calcium-hardness requirement | 150–250 ppm | 25–75 ppm |
| Source-water preparation | Compatible Minnesota source water may require fewer hardness adjustments, but it must still be tested before startup. | Source water above the required hardness range may require calcium reduction using the manufacturer’s approved process. |
| Salt level | Approximately 1,500 ppm | Approximately 1,750 ppm |
| Wear part | Electrode cell and anode, with replacement needs depending on use, water conditions and maintenance | Replaceable cartridge rated for up to four months under qualifying operating conditions |
| Additional sanitizer work | Non-chlorine shock at startup and after heavy use, plus regular testing and balancing | Chlorine granules at startup and as needed, plus regular testing and balancing |
| Water-replacement interval | Follow the current Blu-Fusion manual and actual water conditions | Up to 12 months under qualifying conditions and with proper care |
| Ozone compatibility | Installs using the ozone line, so the existing ozonator or AOP system may need to be removed | FreshWater IQ monitoring has specific compatibility requirements, including limitations involving ozone |
| Swim-spa application | Included in the manufacturer’s settings and application information | Not offered as a FreshWater swim-spa system |
| Spa compatibility | Can be installed by MinnSpas in compatible Artesian, Aquatic and other hard-shell spas; never in a Softub | Designed for compatible Hot Spring-family spas |
| Warranty | Three years when installed with a qualifying new spa from MinnSpas; one year for the self-install kit | One year on the controller; cartridges are consumable components |
| MinnSpas price | $1,495 installed with a qualifying new spa or $1,195 for the self-install kit | Available through Hot Spring dealers at their current pricing |

The FreshWater fine print worth knowing
- Calcium hardness must be maintained within the manufacturer’s specified range. If the source water contains too much calcium, an approved calcium-reduction process may be required at each refill.
- Reduced maintenance does not mean automatic maintenance. Regular testing, balancing and sanitizer monitoring remain the owner’s responsibility.
- You may still handle chlorine. The manufacturer’s instructions include adding dichlor granules during startup and manually adding chlorine when needed.
- Compatibility and warranty requirements matter. Adding a nonapproved sanitation device can affect warranty coverage, so system conversions should be reviewed before installation.
Fair is fair—Blu-Fusion has homework too
Blu-Fusion also requires proper startup and regular care. Its instructions call for source-water testing, low phosphates, a metals check before adding salt, routine sanitizer testing and keeping pH within the required range to help protect the electrode cell.
That may involve less calcium preparation than FreshWater requires for some Minnesota homes, but it does not mean zero maintenance. Like other salt systems, Blu-Fusion may contribute to rising pH over time. Regular testing identifies that change before it becomes a water or equipment problem.

The bottom line
Choose by sanitizer type and ownership routine—not simply by the word “salt.”
Blu-Fusion generates bromine and is our preferred salt-system direction when a compatible MinnSpas customer wants the steady sanitizer delivery and water experience associated with bromine. FreshWater offers integrated chlorine generation for compatible Hot Spring spas, but its source-water requirements may involve additional calcium preparation.
If you are committed to buying a Hot Spring spa, FreshWater is its integrated salt option. If you are still choosing both the hot tub and the ownership experience, MinnSpas can help you compare the complete systems before you buy.
Now you know that “salt water” is not one universal system. Your real choice includes which sanitizer is generated, what your source water requires and how much routine involvement fits your ownership style.
