What to Know Before Buying an Extra Large Hot Tub

Extra large hot tubs measure 96″ and above — many models run 100″ to 112″ per side — and carry filled weights of 5,500 to 7,500 lbs or more. These are the largest shells in residential hot tub ownership, and they require a level of pre-purchase planning that smaller categories simply don’t. Foundation, electrical service, and delivery access are not optional discussions at this size — they’re the first things to confirm, before you choose a model.

Extra large spas typically seat 8 to 9 people and are found in the large to extra-large size range. Browse by 8-person or 9-person seating capacity, or use the Find My Hot Tub tool to combine filters.

Foundation Planning

A reinforced concrete pad is required for extra large hot tubs — minimum 4″ thick, preferably 6″ for models at the upper end of the weight range. The pad must be sized to the spa’s footprint, poured level, reinforced with rebar or wire mesh, and fully cured for at least 28 days before the spa is placed on it. At 5,500–7,500 lbs, no other foundation type handles this weight reliably over the long term. Wood decks require structural engineering review and modification to be viable at this class — the default assumption is that they are not adequate without intervention.

Electrical Service

Extra large spas typically require 60–80 amps on a dedicated 240V circuit. Premium models with dual or triple high-output pump systems can approach or exceed 100 amps. Confirm the exact electrical spec for the specific model you’re purchasing — not a general range — and have a licensed electrician complete the circuit and install the GFCI disconnect before delivery day. Budget $600–$1,200 for the electrical work depending on panel location and distance.

Premium Features at the Extra Large Scale

At this size, manufacturers bring full feature sets: two or three pumps running independent jet zones simultaneously, 60–90+ jets organized across therapeutic zones for every seated position, full LED lighting packages, waterfall and fountain elements, programmable topside controls with digital water management, and in many models, integrated audio systems. Extra large spas are where feature lists that sound like marketing on smaller shells actually become meaningfully usable in practice — because the shell is big enough that everyone has their own zone.

Delivery Access and Crane Placement

Crane delivery is the norm for extra large spas. At 96″–112″ wide, these shells will not pass through any standard residential gate, and at 5,500–7,500 lbs they cannot be hand-carried over obstacles. If there is a straight, clear, hard-surface path from the delivery truck to the installation pad, crane may not be required — but that is the exception, not the rule at this size. MinnSpas reviews your full access situation before scheduling delivery. This is not a day-of conversation.

Extra Large Hot Tubs — New vs. Refurbished

True extra large models are rare in our refurbished program — they come through infrequently and sell quickly when they do. Every refurbished spa goes through a full mechanical rebuild before resale regardless of size. Join the Priority List on the refurbished page if you’re open to a refurbished extra large spa.

Frequently Asked Questions

Extra large hot tubs at MinnSpas measure 96″ and above — most models fall between 100″ × 100″ and 112″ × 112″, roughly 8½ to just over 9 feet square. Some models are slightly rectangular. Filled weight runs 5,500–7,500 lbs depending on the shell. Always confirm specific dimensions and weight before finalizing a foundation plan.

Most extra large models require 60–80 amps on a dedicated 240V circuit. High-output multi-pump models can exceed 80 amps. Always confirm the exact amp draw and wiring spec for the specific model you’re buying — not a general category estimate. Have a licensed electrician install the circuit and GFCI disconnect before delivery day. Budget $600–$1,200 depending on panel location and run distance.

A reinforced concrete pad — 4″ minimum, 6″ preferred for heavier models. The pad must be level, sized to the spa footprint, reinforced with rebar or wire mesh, and cured for 28 days before the spa is placed on it. No other foundation type reliably handles 5,500–7,500 lbs long-term. Wood decks require structural engineering review and modification to be viable at this weight class.

In most residential installations, yes. Extra large spas at 96″–112″ wide do not pass through standard gates, and at 5,500–7,500 lbs they cannot be manually moved over obstacles. If there is no direct, hard-surface path from the delivery truck to the pad, crane placement is required. MinnSpas reviews access with every customer before scheduling — this conversation happens upfront, not on delivery day.

A well-insulated extra large spa on a 240V circuit typically costs $60–$100 per month in Minnesota depending on jet usage, insulation quality, cover R-value, and electricity rates. At this size, insulation spec has the largest impact on winter operating costs. Full-foam insulation, an insulated base, and a high-R-value cover are worth prioritizing when comparing models in this category.

At the extra large scale, most models include multi-pump systems (2–3 pumps), 60–90+ jets organized across independent zones, full LED lighting packages, programmable topside controls with digital water management, and often waterfall or fountain elements. Some models include integrated audio. These features are standard at this tier — the shell is large enough that multi-zone independent control is genuinely useful rather than a spec-sheet item.
