Why Two-Speed Hot Tub Pumps Can Use Different Amounts of Electricity
Why do two spas with “two-speed pumps” cost different amounts to run?
Because “two-speed pump” describes a design, not an electrical footprint. Two pumps can carry the same label on a brochure while drawing very different amounts of current on low speed — and low speed is the speed that runs for hours every day to filter and heat the water. The pump’s data label and the spa’s factory programming tell the real story; the brochure usually doesn’t.
Low speed is where the money goes
- High speed runs minutes; low speed runs hours. You use the jets for a soak. The low speed runs daily filtration cycles and every heating call — often several hours a day, all year, in a Minnesota climate.
- Low-speed draw varies meaningfully between pumps. Motor design, winding configuration, and voltage all matter. Two pumps with similar-sounding horsepower can differ several-fold in what low speed actually pulls.
- Hours × draw = cost. A modest difference in low-speed draw, multiplied by daily filtration hours and twelve months, is the hidden gap between two spas that looked identical on paper.
Why brochure horsepower doesn’t settle it
Horsepower ratings sell jets, not efficiency. Some manufacturers select pumps specifically for a frugal low speed; others choose equipment primarily to meet a price point. Neither choice shows up in the marketing name — both are still “two-speed pumps.” The honest comparison lives on the equipment itself.
How to read a pump data label
- Voltage — confirms what the figures refer to (a 115V and a 230V rating aren’t comparable at a glance).
- Amps per speed — most labels list two current values; the smaller one is low speed. That’s your filtration-and-heating number.
- Then ask about programming — how many low-speed hours per day does this spa run from the factory? Draw only matters multiplied by hours.
Real numbers from real spec sheets
Here’s how much low-speed draw varies between actual two-speed pumps — all from published manufacturer specifications, all from respected brands:
- South Seas two-speed jet pump (220V): 10.0 amps high · 1.0 amp low
- Watkins Wavemaster 8200 (230V): 8.5 amps high · 2.8 amps low
- Watkins Wavemaster 9200 (230V): 11.0 amps high · 3.3 amps low
- Jacuzzi 6500-367 (220–250V): 12 amps high · 4.4 amps low
Notice what happened: the high-speed numbers are all in the same neighborhood — that’s the number brochures talk about — while the low-speed draw varies more than four-fold. These are all quality pumps from established manufacturers; the point isn’t that any of them is bad. The point is that low speed is where spas quietly differ, it’s the speed that runs for hours every day, and you can’t see it anywhere but the spec sheet or the label.
