Traditional

Traditional saunas heat the room with an electric rock heater, up to about 194°F. Ladle water on the hot stones for a burst of steam. Plan on 30–45 minutes for the rocks to fully heat. Most traditional models need a 240V circuit wired by a licensed electrician, but compact models like the TimberSteel 420 run on a dedicated 120V outlet. Choose traditional if you want the classic Finnish high-heat-and-steam experience, indoors or out.

Choosing a Rock Heater Size

Heater size follows cabin size. The two-person TimberSteel 420 uses a 2.2kW Icelandic Lava heater that plugs into a dedicated 120V/20A outlet. The TimberSteel 430 and outdoor Reyk 520 use a 6kW heater. The five-person TimberSteel 450 and Reyk 550 use a 9kW heater. The 6kW and 9kW heaters run on 240V, are hardwired by a licensed electrician, and have a Wi-Fi touchscreen controller.

Every traditional model includes sauna stones, a bucket and ladle, and a thermo-hygrometer. Want traditional heat outside? See our outdoor saunas.
